Honfleur is best known for its picturesque old basin, characterized by its houses with facades covered with slate, and have been repeatedly represented by artists, including including Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Barthold Jongkind, forming the École of Honfleur which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. Alphonse Allais and Erik Satie were born in the same street. The municipality has 57 historical monuments, among which the Sainte-Catherine Church, the Church Saint-Étienne, Saint-Léonard, two granaries to salt, the lieutenancy, and most of the houses of the Sainte-Catherine Wharf. Two barns remain on the three original, one having been destroyed by fire. These two buildings contained 10 000 tonnes of salt to keep the fish from this important fishing port. They were built in the 17th century, after the inhabitants of the city were permitted.
